Emergency Twin C-Section - Positive Birth Story

Whilst a C-Section birth had been the plan all along for Jodie to give birth to her twin boys, her waters breaking early meant she ended up having what was classed as an Emergency C-Section. However, despite being nervous, having watched our c-sectionuk Prep, Birth and Recovery Courses, she felt prepared for what was to come! Jodie shares her twin birth story with us.

My twin boys decided to arrive a week early via Emergency C-Section in November 2023.

The whole time I was pregnant the boys didn't change positions too much. One was breech, the other transverse, so the whole time I pretty much knew I would be having a C-Section, which I spent a lot of my pregnancy feeling quite nervous and anxious about.

I made sure to stop googling things pretty quickly as there are a lot of negative stories etc. that you can read which really isn't helpful.

I bought the c-sectionuk Course Bundle which really helped to ease my anxiety and the Hypnobirthing C Breathing technique gave me something to focus on when the time came.

I was booked for a planned C-Section at 37 weeks but at 36 weeks my waters broke at home (very uneventful, I wasn't even sure that that was what it was!). After quite a long wait at hospital they checked me and realised I was in labour so an Emergency C-Section was the new plan.

Due to other emergencies coming in we ended up having to wait until 3am to go into theatre which was a bit stressful but the Midwives were so good looking after me. I was really nervous but they were so reassuring.

The actual C-Section was way way less scary than I thought. The epidural felt fine, just a strange feeling but not unpleasant.  The procedure was pain free, just a weird sensation of pulling etc and the moment that they delivered our boys was magical. Again, all the staff were amazing, so reassuring, chatting and joking with me throughout whilst explaining everything.

The recovery I’d say was slightly harder than I thought. Not being able to get out of bed for 12 hours was hard, then the pain stopped me from being able to do much after, however this only lasted a few days and again the staff on the ward were fantastic, always there to help and were really kind as our boys were in the NICU for a week.

Now, at the time of writing this, I am 2 weeks postpartum and I'm up and about, going for short walks, getting up and down stairs and just not overdoing it too much.

My scar looks fine, really neat and we're enjoying our lovely boys.

My advice to anyone having a C-Section is to learn as much as you can beforehand about the procedure and recovery, and just to know it is nowhere near as scary as you might be imagining. The minute your baby/babies are in your arms it's all worth it.
